The Kids Are Alright, and the Veterans Aren’t Bad, Either

A few years back, if you remember, the slogan for the Sox was “The Kids Can Play.”  I think that only lasted two seasons, because the second season that slogan was in use, it was fairly obvious that the kids couldn’t play well enough to make the playoffs.

Saturday night, some of the younger members of the team proved that they can play, and play well.  Some of the veterans also showed the young whipper-snappers how it was done.

On Thursday, the loss in the first game of this weekend’s four game series against Oakland snapped the Sox win streak at seven games.  On Friday, the loss in the second game of the series meant the Sox owned a two game losing streak.

As this meant the Twins crept ever closer to catching up with the Sox, this was certainly cause for stress. Yet losing streaks will end as well, as the Sox two game losing streak did Saturday night.  The Sox beat Oakland 6-1.

Starter Gavin Floyd earned his tenth win of the season by throwing seven and 1/3 innings and allowing no runs on just three hits.  Nick Swisher went 1 for 3 with a solo home run in the second.  Brian Anderson went 1 for 4, but he had a two run home run in the fifth.  Anderson’s home run extended his hitting streak to five games.  Alexei Ramirez went 3 for 3 with a solo home run of his own in the eighth inning to provide a little icing on the cake.

By the way, none of these gentlemen have had to blow out 30 candles on their birthday cakes yet.  I’d let that make me feel old, but I can look at the plays of some gentlemen closer to my own age: Dye and Cabrera.  Proving those over 30 can still teach the youngsters a few tricks, Dye made an amazing catch in foul territory in the fourth inning, and then he tumbled headlong into the stands.  He managed to keep from hurting himself and to hang onto the ball.  Cabrera went 2 for 4, with a two RBI double in the sixth inning.

Besides those plays, it was fun to see that during the post game interview Anderson received not one but two shaving cream pies, one delivered by Dye and one delivered by Thome.    Good thing the Sox won, because the Twins did as well.  The Sox lead is down to just one game.

This lady has no doubt that a good time was had by fans of all ages at U.S. Cellular on Saturday night.
